WestportWRITES 2017 begins with an exciting day celebrating Westport’s vibrant community of writers.

The series starts with a luncheon from 11 am-1 pm with a keynote by author Nalini Jones (What You Call Winter) designed to be a pep talk for writers. Registration required.

Michael Kingston, the creator of Headlocked, a coming-of-age comic set in the world of wrestling, will speak about his surprising road to success. Christopher Mari and Jeremy K. Brown, co-authors of the Amazon bestseller sci-fi thriller Ocean of Storms, will discuss their unique paths to publication. Literary agent Dawn Frederick, founder of Red Sofa Literary, will share her experience in the book business, followed by a Q&A.

WestportWrites is a robust, year-long series designed to take your writing to the next level. Designed to create a support structure along the path to publication, the monthly mini-conferences and workshop-based programming will culminate with a fall 2018 writers’ conference.

Nalini Jones is the author of What You Call Winter, a story collection set in a Catholic neighborhood of Mumbai. She is a recipient of an NEA fellowship, Pushcart Prize, and O. Henry Prize. Her work has appeared in Ploughshares, One Story and Ninth Letter, among others, and in anthologies including AIDS Sutra and Freud’s Blind Spot. She lives in Connecticut and teaches fiction-writing, with recent appointments at Yale University and Columbia University’s School of the Arts. She is currently at work on a novel.

Mike Kingston is the writer/creator of Headlocked. Ever since George 'The Animal' Steele captured his imagination as an eight year old boy, he's been in love with wrestling, in all its forms, from big arenas to high school gyms. And he's had an equally passionate love affair with comics. Frustrated by the lack of good wrestling comics, he decided to write one himself. The result is Headlocked.

Christopher Mari was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and educated at Fordham University. His award-winning writing has appeared in America, Boing Boing, Citizen Culture, Current Biography, the New York Daily News and U.S. Catholic, among other publications. He is the author of The Beachhead, a critically acclaimed postapocalyptic novel, and coauthor of Ocean of Storms, a bestselling sci-fi thriller he wrote with Jeremy K. Brown.

Jeremy K. Brown has authored several biographies for young readers, including books on Stevie Wonder and Ursula K. Le Guin. He has also contributed articles to numerous magazines and newspapers, including special issues for TV Guide and the Discovery Channel, and recently edited a collector’s issue on Pink Floyd for Newsweek. He worked for 10 years for WWE, serving as Deputy Editor of WWE Magazine and as a member of the company’s television writing staff. Jeremy published his first novel, Calling Off Christmas, in 2011 and coauthored the bestselling novel Ocean of Storms with Christopher Mari. His next book, Zero Limit, will be released March 6, 2018. He lives in New York with his wife and son.
